Central welcomes Danette Griffith

 in the new position of Program Coordinator. She will develop and direct communication plans for membership, evangelism, music, and education which includes advertising, Web development, and media relations. Previous to the position at Central, she was Senior Writer for Marketing and Public Relations at Simpson College, Indianola, Director of Communications for the Minneapolis Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Director of Communications at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, Prior Lake, Minnesota, and she served for 10 ½ years at Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota, in the College Relations Department.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris with a BA in German

and is married to Steve Griffith, Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa.

Information on Flood Relief Volunteer Efforts

Attached is a recent news article from the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program at PC(USA). They are sending volunteer work teams from across the U.S. to help in the relief efforts of recent storms and floods in Iowa.

 

Locally, Iowa volunteer opportunities are available by contacting the following site coordinators:

  • Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area - Richard Tiegs Asst. to Assoc. for Communications is the Volunteer Coordinator contact at Presbytery of East Iowa. He can be reached at the PEIA office number 800-957-4389. Churches accepting overnight work teams are Westminster Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids, Christ Church in Cedar Rapids, and Christian Ed. Dir. Heather Woodin, 319-354-52534(h) 319-338-7523(cell) is the volunteer coordinator at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. They are about ready to start housing volunteers and are leading the housing preparation.

  • Cedar Falls/Waterloo and Parkersburg area - Kaylene Hoskins, with North Central Iowa Presbytery at 800-383-3617.

  • Des Moines area - United Way at http://www.unitedwaydm.org/aspx/news/article.aspx?newsid=128 or call 2-1-1 (This Wednesday, July 2, there is need for volunteers to clean up in public locations such as flooded city parks in Des Moines. Volunteers will report first to the Volunteer Reception Center at 1111 9th St. in Des Moines to receive identification, additional health and safety training and the volunteer location assignment.)

Volunteers must be current on tetanus vaccinations, 18-years or older. Minors must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian. 

 Immediate needs:

  • Prayers for victims and workers

  • Cleanup Bucket Kits (the Presbytery will help get these dispersed where they are needed) How to assemble and package Clean-up Buckets at www.pcusa.org/pda/help/cleanupkitsneeded.htm

  • CROSS Ministries in Des Moines needs cleaning supplies. They recently depleted their supply to families of low income households who have experienced flooded basements. (supplies needed include: bleach, buckets, floor cleaner, laundry soap, etc.) Contact the Cottage Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church at 515-279-8877 or rjvictor@msn.com.

  • Monetary donations are now needed. Send checks payable to Des Moines Presbytery, in the memo section write, "2008 Flood Relief" indicated where you would like the funds to go, tornado, flood, a specific presbytery, etc., and mail checks to the Presbytery of Des Moines, 2400 86th St., Ste. 20, Urbandale, IA  50322.

    • 100% of donations sent to this Presbytery will be used for its intended purpose indicated by the giver. All administrative costs will be absorbed by the Iowa presbyteries.

Cots - heavy duty (100): Size 28"W x 77"L x 18"H; Weight 18 lbs; heavy duty aluminum frame with polyester oxford fabric

Semi-trailers (2): 28 to 53 foot trailers; new or used; must be lockable for security; needed for 2-3 years (then returnable – this item can be loaned); needed for tool storage; needed ASAP by July

Large trailer (1): flatbed trailer; 3-5 ton capacity; 2 axle; 2 5/16 hitch ball; trailerable by a ¾ ton or larger pick up truck; needed for 2-3 years (then returnable – this item can be loaned); needed to transport building materials; needed by late July or August

Freezer (1): 8-12 cubic feet capacity; new or used; scratches or dents OK for this donation

Power washer (1): gas or electric powered; 2500 to 3500 psi capacity; new or used in good working condition; needed by the end of July

Bleach sprayers (24): 2.5 gallon capacity; pump up pressure type; new or used in working condition; needed immediately

The program services children in Head Start - 12th grade.

Feed the Hungry on the 13th of each month

Central members have been preparing and serving the evening meal at the Central Iowa Shelter (former Churches United Shelter) each month on the 13th day. If you would like to help shop, prepare and/or serve, contact Laura at 279-5542.
